Back From New England and Beyond

My family and I have just returned from a supremely pleasant, ten day whirlwind tour of captivating historic and cultural landmarks, both in New England and Upstate New York . We had a marvelous time.  In fact, my head is still spinning from all the awe-inspiring sites we toured and the sights we beheld, both in town and country. The verdant landscape alone would have satiated my senses to contentment.  What a treat it was to immerse within such green and pleasant lands after living so long within drought savaged California.

William Blake might as well have written his poem about the Hudson River Valley for it surely is as green as England's green and pleasant land

I am planning a series of posts, distilling our experiences in Boston, Cambridge, Waltham, Lexington, Concord, Salem, Cooperstown, and Hudson. I do hope you return soon to share in the retelling of our adventures.  In the meantime, please excuse me while I sift through the two thousand photographs compiled along the way, to pluck those deemed most representative.  I expect to offer up a selection in my next post.

You'd better stock up. So many adventures to share with you.

  2. Hello CD, It sounds like a wonderful vacation, driving through New England. I hope you got a chance to stop at a few antique shops. Can't wait to hear the details.

    1. Hello Jim,

I did get a chance to go antiquing a little but the best items I saw that I dearly wished were for sale were the ones in the historic houses we toured. Sigh.

  3. My roots - New England native living in Virginia now but making visits home every Christmas in Boston and summers on Cape Cod and Maine coast. When I'm not there, I miss it.

    1. Hello slf,

I can well understand why you miss New England but having previously visited Virginia, I can attest to both places posessing great natural beauty.

    1. Patience, as they say, is a virtue. I'm still in holiday mode it seems and have yet to tap away and finish my first post. Do stay tuned and keep that tumbler full.

  5. What lovely prospects, both scenic and promised! New England---our own green isle of traditions and scenery and charm handed down for centuries.

We were just consulting our "bucket lists" over Fourth of July dinner, and mine seems to have morphed into a BARREL list, with the first and second always Back-to-England and FINALLY to Maine. My childhood dreams were not of fairyland or Narnia or dells and downs, but of Summer Camp in Maine, sleeping on a screened porch, swimming before breakfast, and looking my eyes full of that GREEN; every tree seemed to have those silvery-white birch trunks, and every coast a wind-swept cliff for gazing far, far.

Sis leaves soon for a six-week tour in their beautiful house-on-wheels, and there are plans afoot for us to Amtrak to NYC to meet the new Grand, then drive up to meet them in Maine. Dream come true. DO TELL.

    1. Oh racheld, what a wonderful vision, a "barrel list"! I do like that and shows that life is full of possibilities, as it should always be.

You will enjoy NYC no doubt (we did!), and obviously meeting your new family members. Maine, I've yet to travel to but from what I've seen, it does look beautiful. Next time to be certain when we fly out East.

  6. I look forward to seeing your photos, CD. I must agree, in California we do forget how green it is in other environments. And after all the rains we had this year, Socal is already looking quite brown. Looking forward to the details of your trip.

    1. Hello Diogenes,

If it's any consolation to you, up here in the Bay Area things are, sadly, very brown too.

I've finally managed to get my rear in order and published the first of several posts on our fun trip out East. I hope you enjoy it.

We were pampered houseguests over the long holiday weekend and loved every fun-filled minute of it. Upstate is, indeed, gorgeous!
