What Is (was) Blooming Inside

Spring blooming flowers arranged in a black basalt sugar basin

Nota bene: I had intended to publish this post back in February but it somehow got buried within the other posts I was working on.  I hope you enjoy it despite the fact that these little flowers are long gone and remain but a pleasant memory.

As you will learn over time on this blog, I love flowers and other natural elements that I am able to bring into my home to enjoy.  I feel that no matter how fine the contents, or how beautiful one's home is, it becomes even more so with the addition of seasonal gifts from the natural world.   Take, for example, the diminutive arrangement pictured in the preceding photograph.  I picked the last of the blue grape hyacinth stragglers and the sunny Avalanche narcissi that were blooming around my home (seen here), and added some cheery yellow and white tulips I had purchased at the San Francisco Flower Market.  The arrangement sits on our drawing room's mantel and brightens the room no end.  Don't you agree?

Any surface or corner of your home will be enhanced greatly by any size arrangement, no matter how small or large,  in a vessel of your choosing.  For this arrangement, I utilized a black basalt sugar basin for my little corner of cheerfulness.  As I gaze upon it, I cannot fail but to smile and gain a sunny disposition.

Tell me, do you make a point of enjoying fresh cut flowers, branches, seed pods, leaves, fruit or other such offerings from nature around your home throughout the year?

  1. Stunning. Reminds me of my sister who can come in from what looks like nuclear wastelands with armfuls of treasures and artfully plonks them in a vase. When I try, it just looks like something left over from Guy Fawkes.

    1. Hello ELS, I can tell you are an artist from your beautiful writing style and I imagine your Guy Fawkes-style arrangements may be prettier than you are letting on. Oh, and thank you for including the word "plonk" in your comment. I've not heard that one in donkey's years and absolutely love it.

  2. I even have a flower budget. It's small, but it makes me think about buying flowers every week or every other week.

    1. A flower budget is so very clever. I fear I'm not that disciplined. I seem to be ruled by my eyes - if it looks pretty, it is coming home! Perhaps I should consider a budget after all.

  3. It is absolutely lovely. I am interested to find that these flowers are over and gone where you are. They are just flowering for me now in North Wales and will be in flower for another month or so.

    1. Hello Elizabeth, and thank you. I love spring flowers but they always seem to be on the decline by the time spring actually arrives. I live in San Francisco and we are lucky that the climate is mild and ruled by the marine layer (I've seen more fog here than when I lived in the UK). Other areas, within a few hours' drive, are much hotter and drier, so I count myself lucky that I can still enjoy daffodils until April. Right now, I have the heirloom Albatross narcissi in bloom, and I think that is the last of the bulbs for this spring.

      Enjoy yours while they last.
